the Dakota, 1010 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., $45-$65, )Īlso: Vocal star Pippi Ardennia and her piano-playing partner Daniel Leahy return from the Windy City for an evening of jazz and searching soul originals (6:30 p.m. With a wit as quick as his fingers, Douglas also fronts his own eponymous band - featuring Daniel Kimbro on bass, Christian Sedelmyer on fiddle and Mike Seal on guitar - exploring a melange of bluegrass, folk, jazz and Americana. Douglas, the in-demand dobro master, has grabbed 15 Grammys and three CMA prizes for musician of the year. Or heard him on albums by Paul Simon, Ray Charles, Garth Brooks, Elvis Costello or 1,500 - yes, 1,500 - others. Jerry Douglas: Maybe you've seen him with Alison Krauss + Union Station. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have played a few other similar underplay gigs on their nights off opening for Guns N' Roses, and they haven't featured a lot of oldies in these shows, instead focusing on newer albums, including next week's release "Relentless," the band's 12th LP. Oh, and the gig happens to fall on Chrissie's 72nd birthday, too. Hence the $500-plus prices for the few tickets available via resale sites. Entry since Prince plugged in using another band's gear in 1984. The Pretenders: Not counting artists who got famous later in their careers, Chrissie Hynde and her rock-steady crew are the biggest act to appear in the tiny 7th St. When we finally got together and picked up the instruments, we got to feel it. But it took us a while to feel that, because the way we were doing it was so unorthodox, piece by piece. You don't need more that already said everything. You press play and it went, 'This here's that ice-cold.' and it was like, 'Oh, what's about to happen?!' But then 'Oh, man, that's what you got? Nah, never mind, turn it off.' And that kept happening for months.įinally the solution was that we just needed to dance - to say, 'Don't believe me, just watch,' and that's it. "I was on tour and Mark would send me something and I'd be like, 'Are you out of your mind?' And I'd send him something back and he'd be like, 'No, my version is better.' We were both fighting for the greater good of the song. "We were fighting," Mars told the Wall Street Journal. This song almost funked up the relationship between Ronson and Mars, who had their differences over the track. The lyrics all sound like they're improvised after a few libations, but every syllable has a place in the rhythm. In that line, however, "show" is repeated twice, creating an inline rhyme. In this case, "Mississippi" and "Skippy" sandwich (get it?) a line that doesn't rhyme with any others. "Ride to Harlem, Hollywood, Jackson Mississippi "Minute" and "liquor-in-it" aren't typical rhymes, but you can get away with it if you have the funk on your side. It's clever, fun and outrageous, but also meticulously constructed with a mix of rhyming patterns. The lyrics are way over-the-top, with Mars explaining that he's so hot he's forcing dragons into retirement. Mars and Ronson create a monster party vibe in this song, starting with the title: "Uptown" implies high class (as Prince or Billy Joel could tell you), while "funk" is the rhythm and release.
